Instrument Petting Zoo

The Instrument Petting Zoo gives children and adults a chance to have an up-close look at musical instruments and play them under the supervision of musicians. Children are excited and delighted to try out instruments in our petting zoo, and many choose to take music lessons!

The MSO Petting Zoo also visits private and public Together in Music events to:

  • Provide children and adults the opportunity to explore and learn about the various families of musical instruments.
  • Provide hands-on opportunities to touch, feel, and play string, wind, brass, and percussion instruments.
  • Help participants learn to identify the family to which a given instrument belongs.
  • Discover the joy that comes from making music!

(Recommended Ages: All Ages, ages 3+)
Visitors to our Instrument Petting Zoos will be given the opportunity to learn about the fundamentals of various instruments. Our staff will help guide participants to explore the various parts of the instruments and make a sound. On average, participants spend 2-5 minutes on each instrument. An average classroom of 30 students can try 1-3 instruments each in a 45-minute class period. The instruments offered are dependent on staff availability, and scaled to the number of participants. Petting Zoos are most effective with a ratio of approx. 1 teacher to 5 students (or less).

Thank you, Muncie Music Center, for your contribution to MSO by keeping the petting zoo instruments in good condition!

And, thank you for the support from the Ball Brothers Foundation, the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County and Shafer Foundation.

This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts.
