MUNCIE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES ITS NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

May 1, 2013 – Muncie Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is pleased to announce that Douglas Droste has been selected as the organization’s Artistic Director.  Droste will take the reins in July as the 6th artistic leader in the MSO’s 64-year history.  Droste is also the newly appointed Director of Orchestras at Ball State University.

Prior to his MSO appointment Droste served as Director of Orchestral Studies at Oklahoma State University and Principal Guest Conductor of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic.  During his tenure at OSU, Droste was lauded for his performances of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, Holst’s The Planets, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, among others. He also helped establish the opera studies program, conducting performances of Donizetti’s Elixir of Love, Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, Menotti’s The Medium, and the full premier of Jeremy Beck’s Review. With the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Droste conducted a variety of concerts as well as productions with the Oklahoma City Ballet, including the full premier of Lanny Meyers’ Legends of Sleepy Hollow and Adolphe Adam’s classic ballet, Giselle.  Demonstrating his versatility, Droste has conducted pops concerts with artists such as Ben Folds, The Flaming Lips, Pink Martini, Michael Cavanaugh, John Pizzarelli, Christian Howes, Cherish the Ladies, as well as the productions of Cirque de la Symphonie, and Jim Brickman’s Tribute to the Carpenters.

Douglas Droste is recognized as possessing “obvious joy” for making music and a “sure sense of timing” when on the podium. Those under his baton routinely acknowledge him for his in-depth musical interpretations, keen sense of communication, and his personable ability to empower musicians.

Droste was selected following a nationwide search for a new Artistic Director that had been under way since the fall of 2012.  “We are excited to welcome Douglas Droste as the new Artistic Director of the MSO,” said Roberto Darroca, Chair of MSO’s Board of Directors. “ Doug is not only an established orchestra leader in the community, but an active performer in his own right. We are confident that after success of 2012-13 guest conductors season, MSO will continue to flourish under Doug Droste’s direction.”

Droste’s recent guest conducting appearances include the Midland-Odessa Symphony and Festival Ballet productions of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker and Adam’s Giselle; frequent appearances with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, including its “Great Music, Great Spaces, Great Images” performance series; and the Amarillo Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra on an all-Bach concert, including performing as violin/leader on Brandenburg Concerto No. 1.

A dedicated advocate of youth orchestras and music education, Droste regularly conducts all-state and region orchestras as well as other youth orchestras throughout the country.  Droste is also active as a clinician and adjudicator for school orchestras and festivals.  Believing that outreach and community engagement are important tools for the promotion of music education, Droste established a Young People’s Concert series with the OSU Orchestra.

“The MSO is a vital cultural asset for east-central Indiana, and the position of Artistic Director is a critical one in protecting and advancing the value of that asset.  Doug’s background, skills, experience and passion make him uniquely qualified to lead the MSO in the coming years”, said Charlie Sursa, MSO’s Board president-elect.

A talented violinist, Droste has performed with the orchestras of Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Nashville, Memphis, Lubbock, and the Lancaster Festival (OH). He is a former student of John Gilbert and the late Michael Davis. Droste is also skilled on viola and trumpet, and has sung with a variety of choral ensembles.

Previous positions include Music Director/Conductor of the Oklahoma Youth Symphony, and faculty positions at Austin Peay State University (TN) and Liberty Union-Thurston School District (OH). Droste studied conducting at the Pierre Monteux School, Oregon Bach Festival with Helmuth Rilling, as well as other prominent conducting seminars. His primary conducting mentors include Gary Lewis, Larry Rachleff, Michael Jinbo, David Lockington, and Jose-Luis Novo. Droste holds degrees from The Ohio State University and Texas Tech University.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  ”The MSO concert is an extraordinary experience!”

Muncie Symphony Orchestra was thrilled to present an exciting program for classical music lovers in Sursa Hall on Saturday, February 23 at 7:30pm. Program included music that the audience certainly enjoyed:

Bartok              Romanian Folk Dances
Schumann      Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54
Beethoven        Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92

Guest Artist, Stephen Beus, piano, makes his come back to Muncie!

Stephen Beus,  2006 Max / Allen Classical Fellow of The American Pianists Association, and graduate of The Julliard School made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Julliard Orchestra and James DePreist, playing Prokofiev Concerto No. 3. He has also performed as a guest soloist with numerous national and international orchestras and visited Muncie in 2007. In his special greeting to Muncie residents Stephen Beus said:

“I am so looking forward to returning to play with the Muncie Symphony!  A lot has happened in the five years since I performed in Muncie – I’ve had the chance to play in a lot of exciting places including Shanghai, Beijing, Casablanca, Paris, London, Venice and my debut performance at Carnegie Hall (Isaac Stern Auditorium) to name some of the highlights.  Following my UK debut, a local perfume-maker presented me with one of the most unique gifts I’ve ever received – a bottle of cologne with an original scent, named “Stephen Beus Cologne.”  Never did I guess I would be joining the ranks of Paris Hilton and Brittany Spears with a scent all of my own! But the real highlight of the last 5 years has been marrying the love of my life in 2008 and bringing two energetic boys into the world, ages two and one.”

Stephen’s performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor was stunning! It was very sensual and powerful at the same time. Beus was extremely expressive in his interpretation of this romantic piece and his technique was superb.

Stephen currently is teaching at Miami University of Ohio and enjoying life as a mid-westerner.

Partnering with Stephen in this exciting program was David Glover, assistant conductor of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra who delivered a very successful children’s concert with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra back in January of this year.
Audience appreciated the excitement, energy, precision and passion that the orchestra and conductor projected from the stage and igniting the hall. Leaving the near full capacity 600 seat Sursa Hall, concert goers left very flattering comments about their concert experiences, such as ” the conductor was phenomenal”, “the concert was extraordinary, the orchestra played so well”, ” really enjoyed it”, “the solosit was stunning”, “fantastic experience”.
MSO invited everyone not only to experience the magic of music in the concert hall but also to meet MSO guest conductor at a pre-concert talk and socialize with the musicians and enjoy refreshments after the concert in Mueller Lobby.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  MSO 64th season opening September 15

WHAT:      MSO 64th season opening night: Prokofiev & Brahms.

WHERE:     Sursa Performance Hall, BSU campus

WHEN:        September 15, 2012 7:30pm concert, 6:30pm pre-concert talk with guest conductor

Muncie Symphony Orchestra officially opens its 64th Season on Saturday, September 15 at 7:30pm with a classical program Prokofiev & Brahms at acoustically perfect Sursa Hall on Ball State University campus.

The 7:30 performance includes Sinfonia Concertante, op. 125 by Prokofiev, which represents a result of decade-long musings brought to life by the expressive power of the cello and the wide range of orchestral timbres. The concert features Austin Huntington (cello), MSO Young Artist Competition winner in the senior division 2012 who swept multiple awards at most recent international competitions. He was awarded a first prize at the 2012 Irving M. Klein International String Competition, Gold medal and Bach award at the 2011 Stulberg International String Competition, and first prize at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) competition in 2009.

Symphony No. 4 in E minor, op. 98 by Brahms is one of the most frequently performed symphonies of the nineteenths century, and it continues to challenge and intrigue scholars with its subtle internal relationships. Only very few composers have combined Brahms’ intellectual powers with passionate and evocative musical sounds.

A prelude- an informative talk with MSO guest conductor from Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Sameer Patel, will precede the concert in the Sursa Hall at 6:30pm.

For tickets, contact the Emens box office at 765.285.1539 or visit the box office between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets are also available through Ticketmaster by calling 800-745-3000 or visiting www.ticketmaster.com

For Immediate Release:  The Muncie Symphony to Perform World Premiere on April 28, 2012

April 18- “A Swashbuckling Adventure…From Days of Yore”, written by Dr. Jody Nagel for award-winning flutist Mihoko Watanabe, will premier on April 28 in Emens Auditorium.

The 7:30 performance includes Symphony No. 5 in d minor, op. 47 by Shostakovich.  Shostakovich’s Symphony is one of his most popular works.  The Symphony shows Russian mastery of orchestration as he takes the audience on a wild ride with crystal clear themes passed among sections of the orchestra.

Celebrated and versatile flutist, Mihoko Watanabe will perform the world premier of Nagel’s combining concerto for flute and orchestra with the character of an epic adventure film score.   The four movements entitled (1) Sea Voyage in Search of a Fairy Queen, (2) The Enchanted Castle, The Dungeon, and the Beast, (3) The Hero’s Three Impossible Deeds, and (4) The Battle for Virtue and The Celebration Feast invite the listener to imagine four fairy tales or legends as the music is played.

Two multi-dimensional art works created by elementary and college students as an artistic interpretation of Dr. Nagel’s composition will be displayed in the Emens Auditorium lobby before, during and after the concert.

A free talk with composer Dr. Jody Nagle, Artistic Director Bohuslav Rattay and Art Historian Lara Kuykendall will precede the concert in the William’s Lounge in the lower level of Emens Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. No reservations are required.

For tickets, contact the Emens box office at 765.285.1539 or visit the box office between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tickets are also available through Ticketmaster by calling 800-745-3000 or visiting www.ticketmaster.com
