Muncie Symphony Orchestra to share conductor

By OSEYE BOYD

Get used to sharing the talents of Muncie Symphony Orchestra conductor Bohuslav Rattay.

In addition to conducting Muncie Symphony Orchestra and Ball State Symphony Orchestra, Rattay was named to lead the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra in Lake Charles, La.

But don't take this move as an omen that Rattay is leaving Muncie any time soon. He's staying for awhile, and MSO Executive Director Elissa McDonald couldn't be happier for Rattay. His latest assignment is proof that the MSO made a great choice in hiring a conductor whose talent is wanted by others, and this will help Rattay gain more experience -- which will benefit Muncie, she said.

"He needs to move forward in his career," McDonald said. "I would be worried if no other orchestra wanted him."

Rattay will divide his time between the two orchestras and cities. Jumping from town to town on a regular basis might seem unusual to outsiders, but for conductors, it's a pretty normal life -- going home every night is unorthodox, McDonald said.

Rattay isn't unfamiliar with Lake Charles or the orchestra. He went to college in the town and played with the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra.

"It kind of feels like he's coming home," said Debbie Reed, executive director, her voice full of enthusiasm.

Reed isn't the only one excited. The whole community is excited. The community participated in the selection of a new conductor, and Rattay was the overwhelming choice, Reed said. He also was the musicians' choice.

"They were thrilled when we made the announcement to our community," Reed said. "We're 53 years old and he'll be our sixth conductor."

Rattay will conduct a concert with the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra over the weekend.
