There will be something new about this year's Symphony on the Green -- it also will be an Arts and Music Festival.
As in the past, the event -- set to begin at 4:30 p.m. June 13 on the Ball State University Arts Terrace -- will feature music by Muncie Symphony Orchestra, lots of picnicking, an instrument petting zoo and the traditional Children's March.
But there will be so much more.
"We'll have a wide variety of activities and performances, even belly dancers," said Elissa McDonald, executive director of Muncie Symphony Orchestra, adding that one of the event's sponsors is the Muncie Arts and Culture Council.
A potpourri of performances will be given by Muncie Civic Theatre, Muncie Ballet, Masterworks Chorale, Ancient Arts Dance with il Troubadore, Magic City Music Men,
After MSO takes the stage at 7 p.m., superconductor finalists Stan Sollars, Terry Whitt Bailey and Mark DiFabio will conduct snippets of their pieces. Later, the winning conductor will play his or her piece with the orchestra.
There also will be an artisan market, antique car display, Muncie Children's Museum Kid Zone, Ball State University Museum of Art giveaways and a Second Harvest Food Bank non-perishable food drive.
Admission is free, but there is more than one option for picnicking:
· Take your own blankets and lawn chairs and find a spot on the lawn for free.
· Get tables for your family and friends, including eight chairs, for $20. Non-profit groups can get the same for family and friends for $12.
· Sit at VIP tables and eat a picnic dinner buffet with beverage for $20, adults, and $10, children.
Reservations for paid spots are due Friday. Call 285-5531, e-mail cpark@bsu.edu or access www.munciesymphony.org.
In case of inclement weather, all activities will move to Worthen Arena.
